This kind of transaction goes right back to the days when the Church used to sell indulgences to wealthy aristocrats to absolve them from their sins- a practice I don't have an issue with, since it was probably the only way to get wealth, corrupt scumbags to do anything decent for the poor- which, in later, secular and Protestant hands, evolved into "philanthropy".
