This is yet ANOTHER reason we need to get rid of the Electoral College- it makes it impossible to form new parties when the existing parties go into crisis and begin to decline. There is no valid reason to have an electoral system that prevents us from having what needs to happen- the Democrats breaking into a Center Party and a Left Party, the GOP being replaced by a larger version of the Libertarian Pary and also an Evangelical Party- so that people are not held hostage in parties that no longer express what they want politics to be about. There is no possible way that a system that encouraged the creation of new parties and made it possible for those parties to have a real possibility of influencing the political direction of this country.

Get rid of the Electoral College, adopt proportional representation for legislative and congressional elections and instant runoff voting for mayoral, gubenatorial, U.S. Senate and presidential races, and we would see a major renewal in American politics.
