There was some lack of sensitivity on the part of the Sanders campaign- but the Hillary campaign was completely out of line- and did itself damage in terms of its chances of winning against Trump, chances which depended on connecting with Sanders supporters and incorporating at least some Sanders values in its fall message- by repeatedly, relentlessly accusing not only the campaign but grassroots Sanders campaigners- who, as young leftists were generally going to be strongly antiracist- as being collectively indifferent about racism(and LGBTQ+ issue, and reproductive choice). It’s my belief that the Hillary campaign’s smearing of Sanders supporters, combined with their refusal to incorporate any of the Sanders ideas in the fall campaign- helped cost Hillary the election. You can either trash talk people or ask for their votes- you can’t do one of those things first and then DEMAND their votes. Most of those people were new to politics…the Democratic Party has probably lost at least half of the forever, and gained no other voters as a result of driving those people away.

As a person who tried for my own part to get the Sanders campaign to be more attentive to race, I'd be interested in what you would have had that campaign say and do differently.
