The U.S. government's reaction to the Black Panthers Free Breakfast program is described perfectly in the words of the Brazilian liberation theologian Dom Heldar Camera- speaking of his own experiences with the power structure in his country:

"When I fed the poor, they called me a saint.

When I asked why the poor had no food- they called me 'A Communist!' ".
