The Republicans were the abolitionist, more or less antiracist party...until 1876, when they abandoned any real opposition to racism and agreed to let the white South create the Jim Crow system in order to keep the White House after a disputed presidential election- and note, from its birth in 1818 until it partially broke with white supremacy under FDR and then totally broke with it under LBJ in 1964, the Democrats were worse on race. we all grant that; it's just that the Democratic Party of this century, with its flaws, has no connection to the Democratic Party of Andrew Jackson, the Confederacy and the Klan. That connection was forever severed with the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts were passed-and at the moment it was severed, the GOP became the successor to THAT Democratic Party by taking up "states' rights", "Law and Order" and every other segregationist concept.
