- The issue is Gabbard’s attitude towards Modi, not her Hindu heritage-as I understand it she has converted to some form of Christianity, but again, her own religious beliefs, present or past, are not the point. Nor is this about refusing to accept the idea of a Hindu president. Were Tulsi Gabbard aligning herself with Indian progressives like Arundhati Roy or the political parties of the anti-Modi left, there’d be no argument against her views on Indian politics at all.
- For those who don’t know, hinduism doesn’t actually require full vegetarianism-its adherents often eat lamb, chicken, shellfish and flatfish. Some Hindus abstain from meat totally, others do not.
- Modi has based his political career on the deliberate incitement of anti-Muslim sentiment, starting with his incitement of the Gujurat Riots of 2002. If this isn’t “Hindu Nationalism”, can we not at least fairly call it “Hindu supremacism”? What would the author call Modi’s relentless efforts to provoke resentment towards Muslims among Hindus?
