The first paragraph brings up an interesting point for me- while I was raised Christian- one of the less-pleasant things about some of the Christians I grew up with this was their assumption that their faith actually made THEM personally and morally superior to everyone else, entitling them, as they saw it, to say horrible things in the vein of "if you don't believe everything we believe, you'll end up burning in Hell".
To me, faith always meant becoming aware that you were as flawed and fallible as anyone else, and that what you really needed to work on was being your best self and learning how to treat all those around you as kindly and generously and forgivingly as possible. It meant recognizing that the LAST thing a person of faith is "above" is anybody else.
