OK…the reason the administration was asked by the intelligence services-and they WERE asked; it wasn’t Obama and Clinton’s own idea-and I didn’t word my explanation of this properly in the first post-to say that the film was the cause was that, if they had said publicly that they knew which group was responsible and why, that would have let that group know that the intelligence services were ON TO THEM.
Also, the ambassador had chosen to go to Benghazi on his own, against advice, and as I understood it, he actually turned down additional security. In addition, the GOP had been cutting security funding for the State Department for a number of years, so how much additional security was even available and how self-righteous was that party even entitled to be about this?
The plain facts are, it was not SoS Clinton’s fault that the ambassador went to Benghazi, and no amount of additional security would have made any difference in an attack that was over in a matter of minutes.
The only way to have been sure of preventing this event would have been to withdraw all U.S. forces from the Arab/Muslim world, and neither McCain nor Romney would have done that.
Benghazi did not happen because the U.S. had a Democratic president.
