Nothing wrong with using those terms when they actually apply. Modern Republican extremism is predicated solely on the incitement of fear and hate, on pushing for the intimidation and violent exclusion/repression of everyone the Republican minority doesn't believe to be "Real Americans".

How can any of that be called anything but fascist, white supremacist, or homophobic?

A country can't be free AND socially repressive at the same time. It can't be free and anathemise people for being different. Imposed conformity is the opposite of freedom- freedom is the right to BE yourself, so long as you don't harm anyone else- it's not the right to try & force everyone else to live by the teachings of your form of religion, your irrational hostility to labor unions and social benefits, your hatred of spontaneity, happiness, inner peace and hope.
