It doesn’t make it easier for the tyrants to simply put in expectations, very MILD expectations, that people not be verbal bullies or jerks. For example, it doesn’t give a tyrant anything to work with to set rules, on a college campus, that racial or gender slurs can’t be shouted at people or that no one should have to justify their admission to the school simply because some anti- affirmative action obsessive keeps following them around screaming that they have no right to be there because they supposedly took a place in the class from a white guy who “deserved” it more.

And you’re also leaving out the fact that free speech for the powerless and free speech from below are never defended by free speech absolutists in this society. People with your perspective never speak up when black women or Palestinians or leftists are denied platforms due to pressure from right-wing groups or wealthy alumni.

This is why free speech absolutism benefits no one but the privileged and why it’s absurd to argue that the powerless and the dispossessed depend on the Milos and the David Dukes and the Ben Shapiros and the frat boys who crash “safe spaces” for people who aren’t straight white folks are protected.
