I'm sorry, but the idea that the purpose of college should be "filtration", not education, is also repugnant.
We are already in a society that devalues and dismisses far too many people. Why would you want even MORE human devaluation? Why would you want more people than currently are to be discarded, dismissed, told they are worthless failures or "deadwood"?
What possible hope or beauty or insight or learning can come from an institution of higher learning whose core values include the official declaration that large numbers of students are useless, worthless, expendable?
What kind of world has that mindset ever given us?
