If Southern states WANT to secede, The places in those states that DON’T want to secede must be allowed to secede from the Secession.
In some Southern states, there is an increasing push, from parts of the slowly-eroding white majority in those states, to once again do what that region tried and failed to do, at the cost of a million lives between 1861 and 1865- secede from the Union and create an independent, white supremacist right-wing dictatorship.
If such a secession were to prevail this time, it would be a catastrophic nightmare for the 40% to 45% of the population of each of those states that is African-American, Latinx-American, Indigenous, Muslim, Jewish and LGBTQ- everyone in each of those groups in a triumphant Southern Secessionist state would be stripped of most, if not all of whatever current protections against discrimination and exclusion they currently hold- and once those protections are stripped away, essentially everyone in those communities would be stripped of ANY rights whatsoever, with a successfully secessionist South treating all of those groups essentially as South Africa treated Black, Mixed-Race and Indian South Africans- all oppressed, but with minute differences of degree in the oppression in order to prevent those groups from uniting with each other fully in a liberation struggle.
In every Southern state, however, there are large, progressive cities, and in some cases large regions…
