I sure as hell hope the way you treat your neighbors isn't the way it's supposed to be, because you seem to hate the very idea of human connection and community. Why SHOULDN'T everyone reach out and welcome, in some way, even with something as simple as a plate of cookies and a card,, all those who move into our neighborhoods? Why shouldn't we err on the side of warmth and inclusion? It's not as though we can't do that and still take care of our work and our responsibilities at home. In answer to your first question: "why do (any of us) have to do something?". Simple, you (or I, or anyone else) are human beings, damn it. We all owe each other something, some level of empathy and respect. That's the difference between living in a decent society and living in the MAD MAX universe.
In any case...what do you have to lose by making those around you feel that it's their neighborhood as much as yours?
