I agree with the need to emphasis the issues you raised in the last paragraph far more. My response to that is: does it have to be "either/or"?, also, is there any indication that people who enjoy the sort of "jokes" were talking about here are ever going to be allies/accomplices/activists in the work of change?

I remember the rise of P.J. O'Rourke's iteration of The National Lampoon in the mid-to-late 70s.

There seemed to be a direct correlation, at the last, between people finding those jokes funny and supporting reactionary, exclusivist political and social ideas like opposition to affirmative action and refusal to accept non-heteronormative people.
