Care to explain how such a new party could "gather steam" if everyone is still made to feel obligated to "vote blue no matter who"?

It doesn't seem possible for such a party to gather steam if it can't actually contest elections.

A better choice would be for Democratic state legislatures to change the electoral system in their states to adopt ranked-choice voting for multi-member legislative districts.
