Again, October 7th was a disgrace- but it was never the start of this conflict. The actual start of it was the treatment Palestinians have been subjected to continuously since 1967, and to lesser degrees since 1948, since the Israeli government, from the start was committed to ultimately taking the West Bank and making a Palestinian state impossible- Ben-Gurion was telling his supporters in early 1948 that, if Palestinians took the partition offer, he would immediately have his troops attack and try to take the West Bank- was and is the true root cause.

It's the decades of subjugation and oppression of ordinary Palestinians that are largely- not exclusively, but largely the cause of it.

The existence of Hamas- a group I don't like any more than you, but also a group which probably can't actually be crushed- and whose crushing, even if possible, would cause nothing but the emergence of a far worse successor group pledged to avenging any humiliation of Hamas.

Hamas didn't emerge for no reason- it was cultivated by Netanyahu as a counterweight to Fatah, the group which HAD recognized Israel- a recognition the Israeli Right always treated as if it didn't count- and repeatedly compromised and negotiated, nearly destroying its credibility with ordinary Palestinians by cooperating with the Israeli security apparatus- and with which there was always the real possibility of actually ending the war.

Netanyahu and the Israeli Right- and now, it seems the "moderate" opposition parties as well- doesn't want the war to ever end.

As you implicitly acknowledge in this post above, the war is the only thing keeping Netanyahu in power- therefore, there is no way to back the war without backing the continued political survival of Netanyahu, who is certain to be voted out and likely to end up serving a lengthy prison sentence for corruption if the war ever does end- which it might not, and might not for decades.

Hamas wouldn't exist if the Israeli government had ever even tried treating Palestinians with anything close to humanity and common decency- if it hadn't decided to treat ALL Palestinians as terrorists, if it hadn't held ALL of them complicit for the acts of the armed factions- factions whose actions are, in some respects, little different on a moral level from some of the Zionist militias, particularly the Irgun and Lehi-a.k.a, "the Stern gang"- during what Israelis call "The War of Independence" and Palestinians call "the Nakba"-the catastrophe.

This conflict also wasn't started or perpetuated by Iran- there was never a scenario in which, minus Iran, ordinary Palestinians would EVER have agreed to Netanyahu's demands that they give up on self-determination and agree to getting nothing beyond Menachem Begin's degrading old proposal for what would have been essentially the same level of "autonomy" as China gives to Tibet. The dispute was never artificial nor was it driven solely or even mainly by antisemitism. To believe that it was is to believe that Palestinians would be fine being treated the way Israel treats them if only it was Arabs inflicting the treatment. NOBODY ANYWHERE is the devoid of dignity.

And the fact that the PLO was formed in 1964 answers an important, though unasked-by-you question: the PLO was formed then because Palestinians NEVER accepted that "Jordan is the Palestinian state" and never wanted to live under Hashemite rule- which is also why the PLO tried to overthrow the Jordanian monarchy in the Black September operation in 1964.

If Palestinians had accepted the Jordan-is-Palestine canard, they would not have formed the PLO until after 1967.

There's no way to end this conflict by getting Hamas OR Fatah to sign an unconditional surrender treater on a latter-day equivalent of the USS Missouri. And as to Iran, the West permanently morally disqualified itself from ever again trying to bring down the Iranian government when it overthrew Mossadegh, who was a secular, non tyrannical leader, working to build an Iranian democratic future, who was brought down by the West for the heinous crime of nationalizing Iranian oil.

Israel is hated by Iranians- including all opposition Iranians- for helping put the Shah back in power and cheerleading the years of tyranny HE inflicted on Iran.

Nothing could be solved by doing what Netanyahu probably wants to do there, and putting some leftover backbench Pahlevi on a restored Peacock throne and bringing THOSE bad old days back- restoring the Shah is what gave the world the mullahs in the first place.

There's never a good reason to repeat the worst choices of the past, and "the West" has no right to ever again try and rearrange anything in that part of the world.
