A major difference in that is that no Republican who defies their party's leadership does so to to support something nastier and uglier and more damaging than what their leadership wants. It's not as if the moderate Republicans who helped pass civil rights and anti-poverty measures in the Sixties and Seventies are morally indistinguishable from the Democratic senators who won't get out of the way and let the Voting Rights Act be restored.
